How to Build a Monthly Giving Program That Lasts

Every nonprofit dreams of consistent, reliable revenue - and a monthly giving program is one of the best ways to make that happen. When done well, it not only creates predictable income but also builds deeper, more loyal relationships with donors.

But creating a successful monthly giving program takes more than adding a checkbox to your donation form. It requires intentional planning, strong communication, and genuine stewardship.

In my previous post, I shared how storytelling helps connect donors emotionally to your mission. A monthly giving program builds on that connection by turning that emotional spark into sustained support.


Why Monthly Giving Programs Matter

Monthly giving programs - sometimes called “sustainer programs” - offer benefits for both the organization and the donor.

For nonprofits:

  • Predictable revenue supports better budgeting and planning.

  • Donor retention rates are much higher than for one-time gifts.

  • Smaller, recurring gifts can add up to more annual support than one large gift.

For donors:

  • Giving becomes easy and automatic.

  • Monthly donors feel part of an exclusive community.

  • They see themselves as true partners in impact, not just occasional supporters.

A strong monthly giving program builds both stability and connection.


Step 1: Define the Purpose and Identity of Your Program

The best monthly giving programs feel special - like joining a meaningful community. Give your program a name, visual identity, and purpose that tie directly to your mission.

Examples:

  • A food bank might call its program “The Harvest Circle.”

  • An animal shelter could name theirs “Friends for Life.”

  • A literacy nonprofit might use “The Book Club.”

This gives donors a sense of belonging and identity within your organization.


Step 2: Start with a Compelling Story

As I mentioned in The Art of Storytelling in Nonprofit Fundraising, emotion drives giving decisions. Use a powerful story to launch your program - something that shows what consistent support makes possible.

Example: “Each month, your gift keeps families fed through our community pantry. You’re not just giving once - you’re ensuring food is on the table every single day.”


Step 3: Make It Easy to Join

The fewer clicks, the better. Donors should be able to enroll in your monthly program in under a minute.

Tips:

  • Feature a “Make it Monthly” option prominently on your donation form.

  • Preselect the monthly option for new donors.

  • Offer suggested giving levels with tangible examples of impact.


Step 4: Build the Donor Experience

Monthly donors deserve more than a receipt each month. Develop a communication plan that includes:

  • A warm, personalized welcome email immediately after sign-up.

  • Exclusive updates about the impact of their ongoing gifts.

  • Behind-the-scenes stories that make them feel like insiders.

  • Occasional thank-you videos or handwritten notes.

The more connected donors feel to the mission, the longer they’ll stay.


Step 5: Promote the Program Year-Round

Your monthly giving program shouldn’t just be mentioned during year-end appeals. Promote it consistently:

  • Add it to every donation page.

  • Mention it in newsletters and event scripts.

  • Encourage one-time donors to upgrade to monthly giving.

Highlight how monthly donors make long-term change possible.


Step 6: Measure and Refine

Track metrics like:

  • Average monthly gift amount

  • Donor retention rate

  • Lifetime value of monthly donors

  • Cancellation rate

Use this data to improve the program and celebrate milestones. For example, if you reach 100 monthly donors, share that success publicly - it shows momentum and encourages others to join.
